Anthony's Pizza Seized by State for Unpaid Taxes

Jericho Turnpike restaurant is closed.

Anthony's Pizza Ristorante & Bar in Huntington has been shut down by the state for failure to pay taxes.

A sign on the door Thursday from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reads: Warning. This property has been seized for nonpayment of taxes, and is now in the possession of the State of New York.

No one answered the phone at the restaurant, located at 721 E. Jericho Turnpike, Friday morning. The last post on the restaurant's Facebook page was made about two weeks ago, inviting people to watch the NFL's conference championship games.

Can't understand how any business can afford taxes and stay open in our area.

Usually if you don't pay your sales tax and or employee deductions the state moves in. I'm sure this wasn't a surprise to the owners. Don't steal from the government they hate the competition!

Rob. I like the last comment, excellent!

And the sales tax is not the restaurant's expense. It's what is collected from customers and is supposed to be turned over to the state. Instead, it seems, this money was used as a funding source for other restaurant expenses.

"No one answered the phone at the Jericho Turnpike restaurant Friday morning." Ummm yeah, no kidding, Patch. It's against the law for them to enter the building. Do you think they would go inside and hang out? SMH...

Use to work for a retail business in Huntington, the owner had many years experience operating retail stores. He told me "it's not how much you take in each day, it's how much you keep". Hmmm.

Our family has eaten many, many meals there over the years and they have always treated us like family! Hope Joe and Co. get past their troubles with the Taxman and re-open soon. They are a landmark Huntington restaurant and a treasure. We've seen too many mom-and-pop businesses close in recent years as our town morphs into "One-Percentville!"

I did work for the owner if this establishment a couple of years ago and he never paid me. I was friendly with an employee here who told me that sometimes he would cheat his employees out of their pay yet still go on lavish vacations and buy 2nd and 3rd homes in Italy and other parts of the world. This family made a LOT of cash from this business and cheated everybody so they could keep most of it. I am not surprised this happened.

Yes, that's the reason for a "death" tax. The government figures most small businesses screwed them on taxes along the way by doing a cash business, they'll get it one way or another. Thus the saying "you can't take it with you".
