Students Named Finalists in Art Show

'Nightmare on Main Street' shows off local artists' work.

Student artists from around Huntington have been chosen finalists in the Huntington Arts Council's "Nightmare on Main Street" juried student exhibition at the Main Street Petite Gallery.

The selected students are  Margaret Kearney (10th grade, Huntington), Jean Marie Miller (9th grade, Huntington), Shaya Tousi (7th grade, Huntington), Alanna Schetty (10th grade, Lloyd Harbor), Eve Ascione (7th grade, Centerport), Gabriel Sherman (7th grade, East Northport), Pamela Best (10th grade, Greenlawn), Sydnie Wittenberg 10th grade, Greenlawn).

  Their work will be shown in a display that includes a black lit gallery which celebrates Halloween and Day of the Dead. The exhibition kicks off with an opening reception  Friday from 6-8pm; all are welcome and admission is free.

There are 27 finalists, with 32 pieces of artwork accepted for the final judging.

 During Friday's opening reception, Long Island educator and artist Dan Christoffel will award two Best in Show prizes of $50 each – one for the Senior Division (9-12th grades) and one for the Junior Division (K-8th grade).  The exhibit will run from Friday until Nov. 5 with special hours on Halloween (9am-7pm) and Saturdays (2-5pm); Monday-Friday hours are 9am-6pm.  Please visit www.huntingtonarts.org or contact HAC at 631-271-8423 for more details.

 Asked about his impression of the work submitted, he responded, "The level of artistic achievement and quality of the artwork presented by students across ages and mediums was impressive, reflecting both their innate creativity as well as the quality of guidance and inspiration they receive from their art teachers."
