April 12: 5 Things You Need to Know Today.

Good morning, Yankees. Today marks the 150th anniversary of the Southern attack on Fort Sumter and the start of the Civil War. Here are some Huntington connections to the bloodiest war in American history.

1.The celebrates the life and achievements of the great American poet who also served as a volunteer nurse in the Civil War. The historical site also has opportunities for volunteers

2.  Take a tour of the on Main Street, open Tuesdays through Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m. It was built in 1892 to commemorate those who died in the Civil War.

3. The South Huntington and Huntington public libraries have dozens of books available on the war.  The Huntington Library's Mary Talmage Local History Room also has some original Whitman correspondence.

4. The will be unveiling a new Civil War exhibit today.

5. Check out the website of the Huntington-based North Shore Civil War Roundtable.  The group meets monthly at the Barnes & Noble in Huntington Station.
