Huntington, Whitman High School Theater Students Garner Awards
Huntington area students sweep eight categories in 3rd annual Hunting-TONY awards.
Huntington and Walt Whitman High School theater students took home a bevy of awards Tuesday night at the 3rd annual “Hunting-Tony” Awards at the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport.
The event, co-sponsored by Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson and Councilwoman Susan A. Berland, celebrates Huntington’s rising stars in high school plays and musical productions.
Each production was evaluated using a standard judging rubric for their performance in 24 categories that recognize acting, singing, choreography, stage crew and set design, orchestra pits and costumes. A panel of volunteer judges attended the play and musical productions to determine this year’s winners.
The students had the chance to take the stage again as the evening featured musical numbers from four high school productions: The Sound of Music, Huntington; Thoroughly Modern Millie, Northport; Urinetown, High School East; and Wonderful Town, Walt Whitman.
Whitman's production of "A Christmas Carol" garnered awards for Best Actress in a Play, Best Supporting Actor in a Play, Best Technical Production in a play, and Best Stage Set Design in a play. Their production of "Wonderful Town" garnered Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
Huntington High School's production of "The Sound of Music" garnered Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Costumes in a Musical.
Berland and Cuthbertson congratulated the students and thanked Engeman Theater for hosting the event.
“As an avid patron of the arts, I take great pleasure in sponsoring the Hunting-Tony’s,” said Berland. “All of these students dedicated themselves to their various productions and put in countless hours throughout the school year to make sure they put on the best show possible."
