Huntington SEPTA Awards Grants

The Huntington Special Education PTA has donated $3,632 for funding nine grants in five different school buildings this year.

SEPTA annually awards grants based upon faculty generated proposals. The group raises the money through various fundraising events.

"We appreciate SEPTA's generosity," Superintendent John J. Finello said. "These new grants will be used by our teachers to enhance classroom education for our students."

"We would like to applaud the awarded teachers for their innovative ideas and for their dedication to enriching the education of children receiving services," said Maria Kiley, SEPTA's co-vice president.

This year's grant recipients:

• Patti Anson – Huntington High School
Kitchen Supplies, etc. to Teach Independent Living Skills to Life Skills Class

• Barbara Noble – Huntington High School
Short-Term Trips for Rewarding 8:1:1 Class for Growth and Development

• Erica Murphy and Kate Carey – J. Taylor Finley Middle School
Digital Photography and Video Equipment to Enhance Language Skills and Behavioral Development

• Kaaren Palumbo – Flower Hill Primary School
Educational Software for 6:1:1 Class (supplementing last year's grant)

• Tracey McManus – Flower Hill Primary School
Flip Camera Camcorder for Alternative Means of Expression in Inclusion Setting

• Veronica Quinlan and Danielle Nolan – Flower Hill Primary School
Document Scanner for Inclusion Class SMART Board

• Cathy Fede and Risa Brachman – Flower Hill Primary School
Activities and Skill Building Manipulatives for Students in 6:1:1 Class

• Shelley Stockner and Sarah Macaluso – Southdown Primary School
Oral Language Activities to Impact Language, Literacy and Social Skills

• Christyn Roseto – Washington Primary School
SMART Board Speaker System to Enhance Instructional Program in SpecialEducation Class

SEPTA's main fundraiser is the annual Sunset and Sounds on the Bay event at the Bay Club in Huntington which is scheduled for May 21 this year. Huntington High School and Finley Middle School are sponsoring an anti-bullying forum Wednesday, May 11, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. at the highh school.

The Suffolk County Computer Crimes Unit will discuss:
Social networking sites and parental controls
Chatting safely online
Limiting profile information
Cyber bullying
Sexting and texting
New internet service websites and technology
