Huntington's arts scene is interactive for and with artists of all ages year round, but the spring seems to hold even more opportunities, especially to children and teenagers.
In recognition of April being National Poetry Month, the Walt Whitman Birthplace invites children ages 8 and up to celebrate this form of art, specifically Walt Whitman's reflective “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd” on April 16 by crafting a decoration to hang near the lilac bush adjacent to the front door of the poet's childhood home. This event will be under the direction of art instructor and poet Anne Kingsbury.
The Birthplace is also hosting Teenspeak Inc.'s exhibit, “Generations” beginning April 20. In May, students from Walt Whitman High School will host their annual Festival of Arts exhibit. Whitman's birthday celebration takes place on May 8 and will feature the winners of the 25th Annual Young Poets contest held earlier this year.

Speaking of Whitman and poetry, this May the Heckscher Museum will have an exhibit featuring the black and white photography of American artist Edward Weston. Several of his landscape photographs were used in a 1941 edition of Walt Whitman's “Leaves of Grass”. Weston's other work during his 50 year career included portraits, nudes and still lifes. He worked with other acclaimed artists such as Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz.
It is also that time of the year again at the museum-time for Long Island's Best Young Artists competition, which begins April 9. It is open to students in grades 9-12 attending any school in either Nassau or Suffolk County.

Huntington is now officially part of TCM's (Turner Classics Movies) Classic Film Festival. The Alfred Hitchcock classic “The Birds” will be shown at the Cinema Arts Centre (CAC) on Wednesday, April 13. Special guests on hand will be TCM host Robert Osborne and actress Tippi Hedren, who may be better known to some as Antonio Banderas' mother-in-law.
If you ever wanted to join a cooperative gallery, now may be the right time for you to do that. The BJ Spoke Gallery recently began offering associate memberships with a one year commitment. Anyone from college students to new and established artists can apply.
If you want to attend a book club, stop by the Book Revue on April 20 for the monthly book group meeting. They will be discussing the mother-daughter memoir, “Traveling With Pomegranates” written by Sue Monk Kidd (“The Secret Life of Bees”) and her daughter, Ann Taylor Kidd. If you are a fan of Paula Deen's sons, Jamie and Bobby Deen, they will be signing copies of their new book, “The Deen Bros. Get Fired Up: Grilling, Tailgating, Picnicking and More”, on April 19.
