Summer Arts Festival

The Huntington Summer Arts Festival is under way in Heckscher Park in front of the Chapin Rainbow Stage.

Events start at 8:30 p.m., except for the Tuesday Family Series, which starts at 7:30 p.m. This week's lineup includes:

* Michael Soloway on Tuesday, July 5. The Moving with Mike show is all about creative movement, dance, fitness and fun. Mike and his dancers encourage children of all ages to get up, get moving and get their wiggles out!

* The Huntington Community Band on Wednesday, July 6. The band's "An American Tribute" includes the Huntington Women’s Choir in a program honoring America and veterans. They will sing “The Battle Hymn of The Republic,” so join in an inspirational evening and celebrate our great nation.

* The Huntington Choral Society on Thursday, July 7. Since 1962, The Huntington Choral Society has been entertaining the Long Island community with the great choral works of the world. The show includes excerpts from Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess.

* Theophilus London on Friday, July 8. An alternative rap artist from Brooklyn, London's genre-bending approach draws from a range of styles, from soul-pop and post-punk to electro and contemporary R&B. London made his album debut in 2009 with This Charming Man.

* The play "Bye Bye Birdie" on Saturday, July 9, presented by Plaza Theatrical Production.

The satiric Broadway hit about Conrad Birdie, rock 'n roll idol drafted into the army, and the effect on his teenage fans and their families in Sweet Apple, Ohio. The score includes “Put On a Happy Face,” “One Last Kiss” and “A Lot of Livin' To Do.”

* The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra, Sunday, July 10. Under the direction of Maestro Lou Panacciulli, the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra will perform musical favorites from Broadway, television and the movies, a program of popular and light classical music (Daniel Gale/Sotheby’s International Realty is the sponsor).

 

The summer festival is presented by the town and produced by the Huntington Arts Council, with additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts, the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs and additional corporate sponsorship for designated evening programs.

The festival runs until Aug. 14. Performances are free and open to the public. Bring a blanket, or stop by earlier in the day to mark out your space.

The Tuesday Night “It’s Showtime” family performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; all other performances begin at 8:30 p.m.

July performances include "Great Band Music Under the Stars," free concerts at the harbor's edge in Northport from the Northport Community Band under the direction of Robert W. Krueger on Thursdays, July 7, 14, 21, 28 and Aug. 4 at 8:30 p.m.
