Independence Day Re-Enactment at Village Green

Join members of the Huntington Militia as they re-enact the reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Huntington Village Green, 425 Park Ave., at the bottom of the Cinema Arts driveway near the Arsenal, from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The event commemorates what happened in mid-July 1776, when the Declaration of Independence reached Long Island and was read to the public on the Village Green.

The crowd listening was overwhelmed with excitment and ran to the town flag that said Liberty on one side and King George on the other. Members tore all of the letters off the flag except Liberty, then stuffed the cloth letters and some gunpowder in an effigy of King George III, hung it from a Liberty Pole on the Village Green and set the effigy ablaze.

Come hear the Declaration read as you have never heard it before. Witness those who are filled with joy and witness those who are overcome with sorrow as they are loyal to the Crown! See the effigy hung and set on fire until it explodes!

Watch the militia muster on the Green, fire muskets, and fire its 18th-century cannon. See and talk to people of 1776. Ask what their concerns are. Learn why each feels as they do.

The afternoon also includes demonstrations of cooking over an open camp fire, period crafts, and 18th-century music, as well as children's activities, including a Children's Muster with "practice musket" drill and "School for Spies."

Musket drills and cannon firing will take place on a schedule on the Green.
