Hofstra University Writers' Workshop
Book Revue is pleased to partner with Hofstra University for a Fall 2010 Writers' Workshop Series. Three sessions, each one focusing on a different form of writing, will be led by Hofstra University professors and will take place at Book Revue.
They are the first pages of a work that often inspire the writer to continue writing and the reader to keep on reading. In this prose workshop–fiction or nonfiction–we will center on that all-important beginning.
Julia Markus, acclaimed novelist and biographer, will discuss openings and give some brief examples of the issues involved from her own novels and biographies. There will then be a chance for participants to read the first pages of something they are working on. Afterwards Julia and the group will discuss these opening pages, at times offering suggestions, and there will be an opportunity for the writer to ask any questions about their process.

A sign-up sheet will be available before and at the start of this workshop for those who would like to read their work. Participants will be invited to read on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no guarantee that we will have time to get to everyone on the list, so if you are very eager to read, be sure to get here early and be one of the first to put your name on the list.
Please bring plenty of copies of 3-5 pages of your work with you. If there is time in this two-hour session we'll do some experimenting in creating and revising opening paragraphs. To that end, and also so that you can jot down your comments on the work of others for discussion, please bring a pencil and paper (or lap top) to the meeting.
