Celebrate 50 years of library joy with programs and events at the South Huntington Public Library all day on Saturday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 25. All events are free except for the evening concert and dessert reception.
At 11 a.m., there will be a 50th anniversary celebration ceremony with Ken Weil, a former library director who helped helped spearhead the new building, as the keynote speaker. Todd Harvey, the building's architect, also will be on hand. A multimedia presentation will run on the history of the library, along with messages and memories from patrons.
At 12:30 p.m., meet the artists as you check out the special anniversary exhibit featuring works by area artists on the theme "The Art of Reading," coordinated by gallery curator Deborah Katz. Meet the artists from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
At 3 p.m., enjoy a family program of Magic Beyond Imagination. Magician Robert McIntee's show features magic, audience participation, comedy, storytelling and a musical routine with special effects.
At 7 p.m., join Beatles tribute band The Liverpool Shuffle for a concert and dessert reception sponsored by the Friends of the South Huntington Public Library. Tickets are $25 and support the Friends work with library programs and services, including the summer reading program.
At 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, pianist Alexander Wu will play music from different time periods and cultures, from early American music and popular jazz classics to the fresh sounds of Latin America. Composers will include George Gershwin, David Brubeck, Chick Corea, Astor Piazzolla and others. His latest CD is, like the concert, titled "Rhythm Road Across the Americas."
