Community to Celebrate 90 Years of Art at Heckscher

Heckscher Museum invites community members to celebrate milestone on Saturday.

The Heckscher Museum of Art was founded on July 10, 1920, with a gift of 100 works of art from real estate mogul August Heckscher. Since that donation, the museum's collection has grown to more than 2,000 pieces.

In honor of the museum's 90th anniversary, a number of beloved pieces from its permanent collection including a rare bronze by François Girardon, the museum's oldest painting in Lucas Cranach the Elder's Virgin, Child, St. John the Baptist and Angels, and the museum's most significant acquisition, George Grosz's Eclipse of the Sun, 1926, will be on display along with newly acquired art.

Along with the anniversary exhibit, which features portraiture and sculpture, and a broad range of 19th century American and European paintings that reflect the romantic sensibility of Heckscher's collecting aesthetic, The Heckscher Museum of Art will officially celebrate its 90th anniversary on Saturday with a day of free fun that includes art activities, live music, games, prizes and more.

The community celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and in the spirit of the gift Huntington received 90 years ago, the museum is asking anyone planning to attend to bring a non-perishable food donation for people or pets in return for a day of free activities for the entire family.

Michelle LaPorte, Heckscher's coordinator of public programs, said the more people who attend the celebration the better. "People bring a museum to life," LaPorte said.

This exhibit runs through September and will feature approximately 40 works by professional artists who call Long Island home. Also starting the last day of July is "Metropolis: Traveling the World," which will feature paintings from the museum's permanent collection which includes works by Georgia O'Keefe, William Merritt Chase and many others.
