Village After Dark: Nag's Head Offers a Pub Atmosphere on Saturday Evenings

Despite the frigid temperatures, many turned out for a laid-back evening at Nag's Head Ale House on New York Avenue.

Usually on Saturdays, I head out to Rockville Centre or Manhattan, but when it's so cold, it's much nicer to stay closer to home and so this Saturday, I decided to try a place in Huntington Village.

I dressed up in jeans, a blazer and heels. I always wear heels, but from the look of the Saturday crowd at on New York Avenue, boots and jeans were more the norm.

We got to the bar about 9:30 p.m. and it seemed a bit early – the crowd really started to pick up about 10:30 p.m., although there were a significant number of people there watching hockey and basketball games.

The best thing, for me, about Nag's Head is that they have cider on tap – I'm gluten-free, which means I can't drink beer, so the fact that I can have a "beer" of sorts with friends is really nice. They've also got Blue Point Brewery beers, Palm and a few other selections on-tap, it varies. Mixed drinks vary in price, but we tried a "Long Beach Iced Tea," which has all the same liquors of a Long Island Iced Tea except that it has cranberry juice instead of Coke. It's really good and decently priced at $9. The beers range from $6-10 per pint, with specials on certain days of the week.

This bar is perfect if you're looking for a laid-back Saturday; there wasn't any dancing (we left about 1 a.m.) but there's plenty of tables, and an outdoor section that's probably really nice in the summer, but not now. The bar itself is dark, but that's expected for any bar in Huntington, and bars in general. The bar got louder toward the end of the night, but not so loud that you need to shout to have a conversation – it has a very relaxed atmosphere.

One word to the wise: be careful walking around Huntington. Unfortunately  a lot of sidewalks downtown haven't been shoveled, so be sure to grab a friend when walking home.

Here's a few things going on this Thursday in Huntington Village and beyond:

  1. Instant Replay Sports Bar & Grill: This bar, in Huntington Station, seems to have an event almost every night of the week, including some kicking game specials. Friday nights from 4 - 7 p.m., they have a happy hour with half priced drinks and a free buffet, Wednesday night (Wing Wednesdays) they have $2 Bud/Bud Light bottles, $5 Bomb shots (not sure what these are, will definitely investigate) 25 cent wings and free pool, Thursday night is Ladies Night (notice a theme) and that includes $1 drinks for ladies all night long. Their Facebook page is updated on a daily basis and seems to be a great way to find out about additional specials.
  2. : Thirsty Thursdays will have you thinking you're a college student in no time – they've got happy hour from 3 p.m. till close, and they have some of the best wings in town.  Seriously they're awesome and come in so many flavors.
  3. : I can't help it, this is my favorite Thursday location – Ladies' Night 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  4. : If you're looking for dinner before drinks, Honu offers a prix fixe dinner from Sunday to Thursday, and Friday and Saturday before 6:30 p.m.

Have fun! And don't forget to share your experiences with me, either here on in the comments or by e-mail me.
