Parades on Land and Water to Launch Holiday Season
Fourth year for big weekend in Huntington.
Huntington's big holiday weekend launches Nov. 29 with the fourth annual boat parade in the harbor, followed the next day by the holiday parade in the village.
Homes and businesses along the boat parade route are invited to join in and compete for prizes for decorations. Registration is required.
The Saturday parade will step off at 6:30 p.m. from the Big H shopping center and move north to Main Street and end at West Neck Road, followed by a street fair on Wall Street.
The town said that last year's parade drew 10,000 viewers and is Long Island’s biggest electric light holiday parade and float contest.
Among the highlights:
- The Halesite Fire Department will have Buddy the Elf aboard the sled used in filming the movie “Elf.”
- Santa and Mrs. Claus and several characters, including Snoopy, The Grinch, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Sesame Street’s Elmo and Toy Story’s Woody.
- Competitions for the best floats in three categories – fire department, commercial and not-for-profit.
This year's theme is holiday toys. Friday is the last day to apply to participate in the parade. The form can be downloaded. For further application information, call Lt. John Damico at 516-852-5919.
The boat parade, which is a fundraiser for the Huntington Lighthouse, will rank boats in these categories:
