The  approved zoning for the proposed Huntington Station AvalonBay project by a 4-1 vote Monday — but not without a fight from some opposed to the plan. Raucous from the start, the regular town hall meeting reached a boiling point just before voting regarding a zoning change which cleared the way for the planning and construction of 379 AvalonBay housing units in Huntington Station.

James W. Polansky was named superintendent of the Monday night, succeeding John J. Finello, who is retiring after 39 years in the district.

The Huntington Republican Committee announced Gene Cook and Herb Morrow as its candidates for the Town Council in the November election.

A Flag Day observance at the Huntington Elks Lodge Saturday provided some flag history, honored students who participated in an essay contest, and ended with a lesson on how to properly dispose of flags that are ready to be retired.

It was a little damp outside Saturday, but inside the firehouse things got pretty hot at the first Greenlawn Fire Department Chili Cook-off. Hosted by the Greenlawn Fire Department and United Cerebral Palsy Association of Suffolk County, the event featured 21 entries from fire departments and restaurants in the area, a raffle, DJ food and drinks.

The second annual community fair sponsored by the Friends of Huntington Station Latin Quarter went on Saturday despite the drizzle. More than a score of organizations came out to support the event on New York Avenue.

Years of hard work culminated in celebration for 596  seniors Saturday, as they received degrees acknowledging their graduation from high school.

Approximately 2,200 acres of shellfish harvesting areas in the Town of Huntington was been reopened, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Eleven teachers and one teacher assistant in the Huntington school district have been granted tenure. Huntington school board members approved the tenure Monday night.
