Oct. 10: Columbus Day; Soccer

5 things you need to know today.

1. Golf Outing: The Wildcat Booster Club is holding a golf outing at the Great Rock Country Club in Wading River starting at 11:30 a.m. on Columbus Day. Registration and lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. Golf starts at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start, and dinner is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

2. Soccer: The Huntington High School boys soccer team travels to Bellport High School to play over Columbus Day weekend at 10 a.m. Monday.

3. Columbus Day: All schools in New York State are closed. On Long Island, all federal, state and local government offices are closed, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and the county courts. The Huntington libraries are open. There is no U.S. Postal Service delivery and only minimal postal services available. The Town of Huntington offices are closed, but some town parks and public facilities are  open. The New York Stock Exchange is open. The bond markets are closed. The Long Island Rail Road generally operates on a normal schedule on Columbus Day.

4. Veterans Driving Class Regisration: To recognize and thank veterans for their dedication and commitment to service, the AARP Driver Safety Program is offering free classroom courses to all veterans, regardless of age, Nov. 5 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Valid form of military identification, such as military ID, discharge papers (DD Form 214), American Legion card or VFW card needed. Military spouses welcome. Registration begins on October 10 at 9 a.m. for South Huntington cardholders. Details

5. Did You Know? Hawaii, Alaska and South Dakota do not celebrate Columbus Day.
