Northern State Bridge Over Route 110 Taken Down

Demolition is part of project to improve road in Melville.

The Northern State Parkway bridge over Route 110 in Melville came down Sunday as part of a project to improve the roadway.

Route 110 was partially closed south of Schwab Road Sunday to accommodate the work.

Eileen Peters of the state Department of Transportation said that the new bridge will be partially constructed out of stone from the the 65-year-old bridge as part of the department's preservation efforts.

In addition, as part of this project, entrance and exit ramps are being reconfigured and NY Route 110 is being widened. Other improvements, such as sidewalks and pedestrian facilities, adequate vertical clearance for trucks, drainage, landscaping and other improvements are planned.
