The Town Board got a standing ovation this week when it passed a resolution urging that the Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Center be kept open. In July, the state Office of Mental Health proposed a wide-ranging plan that included closing Sagamore and sending children needing inpatient services to Queens or the Bronx. Town Board member Mark Cuthbertson said the center "clearly is something that fills a tremendous need and to have it moved to the Bronx or Queens is going to be a hardship on people."
Columbus Day Parade on Main Street
Italian-American organizations and others took to Main Street in Huntington to celebrate Columbus Day.
The Sons of Italy parade included Scouts, seven school bands, and various dignitaries, including a delegation from Italy, marched the route.
Legion Post Honors LI Veteran
American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 has honored a Commack man for his work with the veterans organization. Dennis Madden, first vice commander and membership chairman was recently named Legionnaire of the Year by the Greenlawn post and the Suffolk County and the 10th District organizations.Huntington Hospital Wins Research Funds
Several Long Island hospitals, including Huntington Hospital, have been awarded state funds to help train physician researchers working on clinical projects.
The projects range from kidney disease genomics to malaria prevention. Huntington Hospital's research focuses on improving the quality of care for vulnerable elderly patients, Renee Pekmezaris the project director.
