LIRR Adds Trains For New Years Celebration

Additional service is timed to get people in and out of Penn Station and Times Square.

The has added 10 additional westbound trains to Penn Station Saturday evening for New Year's Eve, including trains that will pass through Huntington Station.

An additional 14 trains have been added eastbound out of Penn Station during the early morning hours Sunday, after the big ball drops in Times Square, with early morning service scheduled to Huntington Station Jan. 1. The first train leaves Penn Station at 12:29 am. Sunday.

Alcoholic beverages are banned in Times Square for the public celebration. The LIRR has banned open alcoholic containers on the New Year's Eve trains, in its stations and on its platforms. The LIRR has also banned smoking on its outdoor platforms, a move that came in November. The LIRR claims MTA Police will enforce the ban.

The railroad is operating on a holiday schedule on Sunday, but on a regular schedule on Monday, even though Jan. 2 is a federal holiday.

  • Leave Huntington at 7:08 p.m., making all stops to Jamaica, then Penn Station.

New Year's Morning ServicePort Jefferson Branch (to Huntington)

  • 2:14 a.m. stopping at Jamaica, New Hyde Park, then all stops to Huntington.
  • 3:12 a.m. stopping at Jamaica, New Hyde Park, then all stops to Port Jefferson.
