Ketewomoke Celebrates Its 100th

Halesite club marks a milestone.

Ketewomoke Yacht Club turned 100 Saturday and celebrated the milestone with an open house at its Halesite home.

The club prides itself on its roots as "a working man's club which has continued for generations." Its primary mission, one club official said Saturday, is to promote safe boating and seamanship. It organizes a range of various cruising and racing competitions and tournaments throughout the season.

Town Supervisor Frank Petrone spoke to those attending the open house, congratulating the club on hitting its century mark, and the club accepted a piece of donated artwork. Members listened to a band, swapped stories and ate while keeping an eye on children and grandchildren at hand.

The club makes its home in the oldest yacht club building in continuous use on Long Island.  Its name derives from the Matinecock Indians who lived in the area and means "where the sea flows."
