Huntington Hospital Claims Surgical First

DaVinci robot system used for specialized gynecological surgery.

Huntington Hospital recently performed a  specialized surgery involving its new daVinci robot system, the first for New York State.

Dr. John Wagner , assisted by Theodore Goldman, Huntington’s director of robotic surgery, used the system to perform two hysterectomies in what is  known as a single-site technique,  in which all instruments are inserted through a small incision inside the belly button.

“To be the first hospital in the region and one of the few in the country to offer this surgical innovation, demonstrates Huntington’s commitment to providing our gynecological patients with the most advanced, minimally invasive surgical options,” Wagner said.  “The single site technique, whether performed laparoscopically or robotically, represents the next evolution in and the most advanced form of this type of surgery.  It’s less painful and the single umbilical incision is often completely invisible.”

The hospital said Goldman is one of only 25  physicians in the country certified to perform robotic surgery via the single site technique. Nationally, there have only been about 300 cases to date using robotic technology for advanced single site gynecologic procedures.

"This is a great step forward for Huntington Hospital, and is the result of our focus on providing the most advanced care across a range of programs" said Kevin Lawlor, Huntington's president and CEO.

Earlier this year, Huntington Hospital was designated as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Health Surgery by the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery.
