Fun and Fitness for Kids

Healthy Kids Day Saturday at the Y.

The YMCA plans an afternoon of fun, exercise and nutritious food Saturday, all part of Healthy Kids Day.

Kicking off at 1 p.m. and running until 4 p.m., the fair will have youngsters--and their families--running, swimming, learning about boating and fire safety, summer camp, and trying organic foods and more.

A bounce machine, a jump rope contest and a fun race, which will be held at 2 p.m., are all part of the action.

Healthy Kids Day is  part of the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of families and to help them get a jump on creating a healthier summer, according to the Y. Healthy Kids Day is celebrated at nearly 1,900 Ys across the country with more than 1.2 million parents and kids participating.

Huntington Jeep Chrysler, Home Depot, Happy Family Organics and others are contributing to the event, while Bethpage Federal Credit Union is helping sponsor the activities.

"This is more about play and having fun with your family," said Joanne Courtien of the Y. "The idea behind it is to get kids and families moving to make their lives healthier."
