Athletes Organize to Aid Hurricane Victims

Soccer teams to collect donations.

Soccer clubs and players are mobilizing this weekend to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The Elwood soccer club is running three girls games Saturday to collection donations.  The games are at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at William Byrne Park on Clay Pitts Road in Elwood. Players and families will bring a backpack or other bags filled with items to donate. And profits from a bake sale will go to victims.

On Sunday, the Cold Spring Harbor / Huntington Soccer Club has organized a drive for non-perishable food, cleaning supplies and cold weather clothing and blankets for needy Huntington and Long Island families.

The drive will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Manor Field Park at 100 East Fifth Ave., Huntington Station. Several political leaders are scheduled to speak at 10 a.m.

All proceeds will be donated to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless and Manor Plains Family Center.
