Harbor Country Day School Students Fling Their Way to Top Place

St. James, NY…

Harbor Country Day School (www.hcdsny.org, St. James, NY), one of Long Island’s premier independent schools for preschool through eighth grade, has something else to be proud of today. Harbor’s team took top honors in two categories of the annual Long Island Pumpkin Fling competition. The Harbor team won in both the “Distance” and “Accuracy” categories for the middle school division. Additionally, Harbor’s team beat out all of the high schools in those categories. Comprising the Harbor team were 14 students in grades 5-8.

This year’s annual Pumpkin Fling took place at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Farm and Educational Center in Yaphank, NY. This is the fourth year in which Harbor Country Day School participated with “Archimedes,” a trebuchet-style catapult designed and built by previous Harbor students under the supervision and direction of George Sotiriou, an engineer by profession and the parent of Harbor alumni Michael and Christina Sotiriou. Harbor’s longest distance was 914 feet (270 feet farther than the closest competition in either division) and its winning accuracy fling was 14.3 feet away from the intended target (27.9 feet closer than the closest competition in either division).

A record number of students and spectators took part in this popular fall event for which Harbor’s students had two pre-event training and education sessions to review safety, engineering and operating principles associated with the Archimedes machine.
