EAC Network and Island Trees Students Serve Up Breakfast for Hunger Awareness Month

The students at the Michael F. Stokes and J. Fred Sparke Elementary Schools in Levittown learned a valuable lesson about hunger when the Island Trees Elementary PTA sponsored a “Breakfast Food Drive.” Kindergarten through fourth grade students, stuffed brown bags with nutritious breakfast foods, and donated them to the EAC Network Food Pantry. It was a school-wide effort. The “Breakfast Food Drive” was such a huge success that it took four Meals on Wheels vans to pick up all of the food. The children and their teachers know the importance of a nutritious breakfast, and they wanted to share with those less fortunate.

“The Island Trees School District should be very proud of the community-minded spirit of these two schools. The children are helping to eliminate hunger in their community one grocery bag at a time”, stated Carol O’Neill, Regional Director of Senior & Nutritional Services at EAC Network. “The 700 bags of nourishing breakfast foods will keep our pantry shelves full during the most severe winter weather. We are seeing an unprecedented surge in people at our pantry due to the Food Stamp cuts. This food donation will go a long way to feed the most vulnerable of our citizens.” The Island Trees PTA and faculty taught the children more than just a lesson about hunger; they demonstrated how important it is to help others.
