Y of Long Island Honors Sammis Family

The YMCA of Long Island is proud to announce the honoree for this years Diamond's & Burlap Auction and Dinner Dance is Huntington resident Scott Sammis and his family.

The event takes place on November 10, at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge to support the free Teen Center program.

Teen Centers provide a place for teens to explore their independence, develop new skills and build self esteem in a safe and supervised environment.

The Sammis Family traces their roots in Huntington back 13 generations to John Sammis’s arrival from England in 1654 and they have been community leaders ever since.

The Sammis family love affair with the Y started with Byron's efforts, as a member of the Rotary Club, to secure property for the new Huntington Y in the 50's, continued through Quentin's work to build the Norton Pool in the 60's, and progressed with Scott's help on the Albicocco Pool in the 1990's and the Sammis Family Childcare in 2010. And the next generation is on board as well, Scott’s daughter Becky is currently promoting the Y's new health programs, and John has served as a counselor in the LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA program.
