Family Service League recently expanded services in its Housing and Homeless Services Division to now provide emergency housing to families experiencing homelessness. Located in Western Suffolk County, this program provides shelter to families that are homeless and have no alternative housing options. The goal is to ensure that homeless families are provided with a safe place to go where they will be provided with the necessary supports to get back on their feet and secure permanent housing.
According to Suffolk County, the average monthly number of homeless families in emergency housing has risen from 271 in 2007 to 477 in 2012, an increase of 76%. Given the current housing crisis on Long Island, many families are experiencing prolonged periods of homelessness and Family Service League is excited to contribute to their eventual return to permanent housing.
