An investigative report shows the Dix Hills representative is one of 33 members of Congress to fund projects that have the potential to improve their own properties.
An investigation by The Washington Post uncovered that about 33 members of Congress, including Rep. Steve Israel, D-Dix Hills, helped direct millions of dollars in earmarks to public projects that had the potential to enhance the surroundings of the lawmaker’s own property. The research showed that in 2008, Israel earmarked $490,000 to study Commack Road, bordering Dix Hills, with the goal of easing traffic along busy bypass. The Post points out that the Congressman's home (in red on the map) is within two miles of the roadway. According to the Post, the project has stalled and the money is yet to be spent. The study is regarding a freight-rail-truck Intermodal facility proposed by the New York State Department of Transportation. The …

Huntington At Your Service to publicly launch online March 1.
Town of Huntington officials held a press conference Tuesday to announce a new citizen request management system that they say will improve communication with Town Hall through smart phones and home computers. Town representatives said the new system, dubbed Huntington At Your Service, will allow residents to make requests and track progress, whether by smart phone message, a phone call or sent letter, and reduce the number of people who get transferred from department to department when contacting Town Hall. "We know we have to pick up and meet technology at the crossroads," said Town Supervisor Frank Petrone Tuesday. The new system will provide an opportunity for residents to more efficiently identify areas of concern to town …

Votes no to hear public comment next month regarding possible bamboo regulation; says his mind is already made up.
On at least one issue, the people's voice means nothing to Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. When voting on whether to schedule a public hearing next month to a Town Code amendment regarding property maintenance nuisances, specifically a proposal to regulate the excessive growth of bamboo, Cuthbertson said his mind is already made up. "I have concerns with the motion that we are going to regulate the bamboo," said Cuthbertson, at a meeting at Town Hall Monday. "I don't know what would be next, poison ivy?" Governement regulation works in some cases, but not with bamboo regulation in Huntington, according to Cuthbertson. "I just think this trying to regulate the growth of bamboo is not the place where Town Board members should …

Rep. Steve Israel praises the decision.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will now allow parents of fallen service members to be buried alongside their children in National Cemeteries. The new rule authorizes the burial of a parent when there is no eligible spouse or child and will allow the parent to know their wishes will be honored ahead of time. Part of the Veterans Benefits Act of 2010, the rule applies to parents of veterans who die on or after Oct. 7, 2001. Parents must have died on or after Oct. 13, 2010 to be eligible. Rep. Steve Israel, D-Dix Hills, introduced similar legislation in 2008, and has long supported this change to the VA’s interment rules based on input from Long Island military families, according to a press release. “For these families, who have made …

Does everyone realize that by decreasing truck traffic we will decrease taxes spent on roadways? I hate earmarks and spending should be more transparent, but this seems more like a red herring headline to sell papers when you actually read the article. You shouldn't just go on a lynch mob mentality every time you hear something anti-democrat or anti-republican. You just sound silly.   more ›
