Sister of Nick Carter Found Dead; Feb. 7 Paramount Concert Still On

Theater representative says show has not been cancelled as of Wednesday.

The Nick Carter concert set for Feb. 7 at the Paramount Theater is still a go — despite the news of the passing of the singer's sister on Tuesday. A representative from the Paramount Theater confirmed to Patch the show has not been cancelled as of Wednesday afternoon. The show is listed on the theater's website. Leslie Carter, the 25-year-old sister of Backstreet Boys stars Nick and Aaron died in upstate New York. The cause of death is unknown. Nick said the upcoming Backstreet Boys tour will be dedicated to his sister. "Nick is thankful to the many people and the fans who have shared their wishes and prayers during this tragic time. We want to let the fans know the tour will go on as promised," said Carter's publicist in a Daily Mail …

YouHuntington: Meet Matthew Fishteyn

Performing at the South Huntington Public Library Sunday.

A determined 19-year-old musician, Mathew Fishteyn has been playing piano for more than 13 years.  A graduate  of the Special Music School of America, Fishteyn took First Place in the Young Musicians’ competition in Wagner College in 2010. His music consists of elements of rag time, jazz, blues and rock n’ roll. The performance begins at 2:30 p.m. at the library.

'The Love We Make' a Hit in Huntington

Rare showing draws sold-out crowd to Cinema Arts Centre.

Following the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles is traveling with his film, “The Love We Make,” about the making of “The Concert for New York City,” in October of 2001.  After premiering the film in Toronto, and showing it in Manhattan and on “Showtime,” he took it to Long Island Tuesday night with a screening at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington to a sold-out crowd.  At a reception afterward in the Cinema Arts Centre café, local residents praised Maysles and shared their thoughts on his film. “I thought this film was amazing, and I’m so glad it came to the Cinema Arts Centre,” said Mary Schuyler of Huntington. “As a Beatles fan, I’ve never seen any of them so candid and up close before.” Robert DiGiacomo…

Unique Play Showing at Conklin Barn

Comedian Jack Simmons shows "Buddy's Gift" in Huntington, a play about "afterlife communication"

Standup Comedian Jack Simmons has brought his play "Buddy's Gift" to Huntington. The one man comedy play takes a light-hearted look at what Simmons calls  is his real life family experience with afterlife communication from his father in 1999.  The play takes the viewer with Simmons as he recounts the jouney of his family from skeptics to believers Simmons says you don't necessarily have to believe in afterlife communication to enjoy the play. The subject is a little hard for some people to believe, but Simmons says he's not there to evangelize viewers, but rather hopes that they walk away "with a great story and the possibility these things do exist." South Huntington Library to Host Exhibit

Reception to be held Jan. 14th 2-4 p.m. at the Alfred Van Loen Gallery.

The Pop Art movement diffused to the United States from Great Britain in the late 1950s, an early remnant of the "British Invasion" era in pop culture.  The phenomenon will be brought back to the spotlight this month, as paintings by artist Bruce Laird go on display. The South Huntington Public Library will host the artist's reception on Saturday   at the Alfred Van Loen Gallery to commemorate the opening of "Memories Fulfilled," featuring 20 Pop Art paintings, all by Laird. Laird's approach to painting is shown through the use of the grid, which blends artistic elements and neon colors into unique creations, often nostalgic, evoking happy and simple times.   SPHL Curator Deborah Katz is excited for the exhibit's arrival. Berland Makes 'Nutcracker' Appearance

Long Island Ballet Theater stages weekend shows at the Long Island High School For The Arts.

The Long Island Ballet Theatre capped off four recent shows with a special perfomer at a matinee show Saturday at the Long Island High School For The Arts in Syosset. In full costume, Huntington Town Board member Susan Berland made an appearance in the first scene of the first act in character as a guest at the Gala Christmas party at the Stahlbaum home. In a press release before the show, Berland said it would be a pleasure to participate in the Long Island Ballet Theatre’s production of "The Nutcracker."  “As an ardent advocate of the arts, I believe it is extremely important to support programs that nurture these talents," Berland said. Whitman to Present 'Down In Front'

Four shows planned this week at the school.

Walt Whitman High School MainStage comedy will present the play "Down In Front" this week. Performances run Friday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Whitman Performing Arts Center. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. The two-act comedy is set in the lobby of an old theater which is about to be shut down by the fire marshals, but the ushers and managers who work there will have nothing of the sort and conspire to make all right for the inspectors.  Cast members include Angela Severino, Cole Dybec, Sarah Klaum, Olivia Marchionda, Kevin Osse, Sean Conlon and Zach Thompson.

Pitchapalooza Returning to Book Revue

Second annual event gives would-be writers chance to pitch ideas, get published.

Some call it the American Idol for books, but for 20 aspiring writers it's a chance at publication. After making its successful debut last year, Pitchapalooza returns to the Book Revue in Huntington Dec. 3. The event, part of a national promotional tour by married couple Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, the co-authors of the book "The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published: How To Write It, Sell It, and Market It … Successfully," offers one winner an introduction to a literary agent best suited for the genre of their book. Choral Society Celebrates 50 Years

Golden anniversary performance schedule announced.

The Huntington Choral Society has announced plans to the kick off its golden anniversary season with a concert entitled “500 Years of Great Choruses, 50 years of a Great Chorus.”  Included in the Dec. 10 show at Huntington High School will be favorite selections from the group’s repertoire.  Founded in 1962 by Dorothea Waddell, the HCS is directed by Steven Finch, with piano accompaniment by Christine Doré.  Past performances have included shows with well-known orchestras, including the New York Virtuosi, Long Island Symphony, Nassau Symphony, and Opera Orchestra of New York in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Tilles Center and Hofstra University.
