Trio DOA at Huntington Hospital After Being Found Unconscious on Houseboat

Police received a 911 call at 8:53 p.m. stating that three people were unconscious on a houseboat in Huntington Harbor Tuesday night.

The scene in the water off of West Shore Road near Margo Lane appeared tranquil as dozens of boats bobbed in the water with their mirror images reflected in Huntington Harbor.

But the reality is three people—one woman and two men— were found unconscious on one of the boats—a white, 38-foot houseboat—just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Police received a 911 call reporting three unconscious adults on a houseboat in Huntington Harbor at 8:53 p.m. Tuesday evening. Second Precinct Police Officers John Peter Guadioso and Timothy Tonkin rowed a small dinghy to the houseboat, which was 200-feet offshore.

When they reached the boat, they saw a man attempting to remove an unconscious woman from the houseboat. The police officers discovered two additional unconscious men on the boat, removed them to a small dock and performed CPR until the arrival of additional rescue personnel.

The Suffolk County Police Department's Marine Unit transported the three victims to the shore where Huntington Community First Aid Squad members were waiting to transport the victims to Huntington Hospital while administering oxygen, according to scanner transmissions.

The victims were identified Wednesday as Juan Torres of Huntington Station, Patrick Franklin and Susan Franklin, who were married, both of Port Jefferson.

They were pronounced dead on arrival at 9:30 p.m., according to Suffolk County Police Department Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman of the SCPD homicide squad.

Huntington Fire Department members also responded and stayed on the scene for several hours and set up their floodlights for use by Suffolk County Crime Scene and Emergency Services officers who were ferried to the houseboat by the Huntington harbormaster. Homicide detectives also were taken to the houseboat where they stayed for approximately 20 minutes before returning to shore.

Det. Groneman said a portable generator was found on the boat and is  suspected to have been the source of the fumes that caused the victims to become unconscious.

Police said that friends of the three victims were concerned about the trio after they had spent a night on the boat and then had not been heard from. An emergency 911 call was received at 8:53 p.m. from an unnamed person who had rowed out to the houseboat in a dinghy to check on them at the behest of friends and family, some of whom were still on the scene at 10 p.m. and were visibly upset.

Original scanner transmissions stated that aided a total of five people and that one police officer was transported to Huntington Hospital, as well. A second officer refused medical attention and was cleared by a police surgeon who was on the scene. Det. Groneman said he didn't have information about that.

Homicide Squad detectives and officers from the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau will conduct an examination of the houseboat. The investigation is continuing.
