Teachers to Join Rally Against Aid Cuts

As school boards wrestle with budgets, a pushback against cuts.

A "rally for public education" that will include teachers and supporters of public schools is scheduled for Thursday at Hofstra University in response to cuts to state aid.

Teachers from the Huntington and South Huntington districts are expected to join the rally, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Hofstra's physical fitness center.

The Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association also has been organizing  several responses to Gov. Cuomo's plan to cut $1.5 billion from state education aid. Following this year's cuts is a plan to to impose a property tax cap of 2 percent next year.

Both and school boards are wrestling with how to deal with the massive loss of funds, planning layoffs and the elimination of a wide range of school programs.

Thursday's rally is part of a pushback by teachers' unions and others against the cuts.
