Hundreds of residents turned out to help or watch athletes compete in the Special Olympics this weekend at
Teachers, students and other volunteers trained to work with the athletes, who competed in a wide range of events as part of Spring Games North.
Diane Colonna, regional director of Long Island Special Olympics, said, "The entire Huntington community embraced Special Olympics. It was just a wonderful day for athletes, coaches, volunteers and all who participated." She said about 400 athletes competed.

Some athletes will move on to the next competition level. Spring Games South will be held at Connequot on May 1.
"It was a great day for the athletes," said Georgia D. McCarthy, the district director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics. "They competed with enthusiasm and their desire to be the best they could be was refreshing. Seeing the smiles on their faces made all the work worthwhile."
