Empty in Huntington: Former Sitar Restaurant Site

Tell us what you want on the vacant property.

Walk down Main Street or drive down Route 110 in Huntington Station and you will notice some vacant storefronts adorned with "For Rent" signs, a possible indication of the hard times the area — and country — are facing.

The Town of Huntington has embarked on a local revitalization plan to spark economic growth in the area and fill empty sites with businesses and housing.

Huntington Patch will spotlight empty properties to foster discussion in the community on what can, should and could be done to rehab abandoned places.

This week's property is the former Sitar Restaurant at 665 Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station which closed in 2008.

Maybe the Realtors Website should work that might help get it turned into any of the above - Trader Joes is a great idea. Sporting Goods maybe but Dicks is right in Melville. Batting Cages are at West just a few blocks from there. Bookstores are closing because of Kindles and Ipads and Record Stores have gone the same way.

Uncle Giuseppe's has told us it's not coming to Huntington right now--we asked them about the Waldbaum's site. Trader Joe's won't answer.

How about the town offers a ten year tax moratorium to whom ever purchases these properties? Maybe they could consider offering use of the old townhouse eyesore by making lowes donate the property to the town for breaking their deal, and make it a bus parking lot, as all the schools in our town are feeling the budget crunch due o the new state legislature.

Hi Hope, The buses are all privatly owned compaines contracted to the schools. They are not really part of the school as you might understand the school structured budget process. I have been learing so much this year with the open budget process at the local school districts. You should go to yours. I have never seen the school budget explained so thourghly because of all the cuts- backs and the 2% tax cap.

Is there really such a drought of casual Italian restaurants here that we need an Olive Garden? Maybe it's just me, I don't understand the appeal at all. There's so many real Italian restaurants right there on Jericho alone.

Trader Joes would be great ... how about a combo fabric store and knitting store? People are starting to do their own sewing and knitting again in this economy.

Definitely don't need anymore restaurants or sporting goods stores.

With all the empty lots, we could also get our Barnes and Noble back as well as another Tower type store selling records, CD's and DVD's - people would buy them if they were available locally.

Jason, if you live in Huntington north of 25A (or even anywhere north of the train station), and you do most of your grocery shopping at Trader Joe's as I do, then yeah, the 40-minute round trip to the store in Commack gets to be a pain. Having one close to 110 would be terrific. It's also worth noting that the Commack location is next to a Best Buy and a Panera, among others. Those stores are also at the Whitman Mall area, but nobody thinks that's too close or "10 min down the road". Commack is not convenient at all.

Enough with the bookstore, try the library, we have enough drugs store and restaurants that have trouble filling seats. One of the large abandaned properties should be converted into an recreation center for the teens, somewhere that the kids can go after school and stay off the streets. Something affordable and fun with a safe setting.

would prefer not to see an arcade. The High School is nearby and that could be a distraction. The parking lot is not big enough for a major store like TJ's. The space can only accomodate a Deli or modest restaurant. Maybe a speciaty store; sports, or bagel place. A GOOD Chinese /Japanese restaurant or BBQ place would be good, also.

@Pam - Aldi's said no or you don't want them there? Aldi's is a excellent choice for Huntington Station - the location could be the soon to be closed Waldbaums. The one in Bay Shore is actually managed by a person that lives in Huntington Station! It is a good solid chain that offers quality products at a reasonable price. This past weekend we passed a new one in the works out by the Smithhaven mall... Aldi's is coming to Long Island and I hope one lands in Huntington. Just saying :)

Empty in Huntington - as well as Checkers and Sitar - what about the following big stores that are now vacant - Toys r Us, Barnes and Noble, Blockbusters, Love My Shoes, Soon to be Waldbaums, Soon to be Mandees, Sbarro's and Mc Donald's at the Mall , Claire's and Sweets from Heaven in the Mall,
Spoke with someone in the mall who said that a lot of the new stores coming are up market - both Cartier and Tiffany's are coming - not sure they are good for the climate that is here!
We do need a new Chinese!
I know Aldi's from Ireland - they are all over there and are a great very reasonable supermarket - Word is that there is a supermarket coming in to Waldbaums ???
All in all it a scary sign of the times !!
