No. 92: Cinema Arts Centre

Local film fans find a home here as its music venues expand.

Cinema Arts Centre is a film lovers paradise. The independent three-screen movie theater tucked into the brick buildings off the Village Green is home to many special events as well as art films, music and documentaries.

The cinema, at 423 Park Ave. in the town's Village Green complex, holds special event screenings, galas, works with schools for film arts in education programs, and hosts special events in conjunction with local groups. Its café and Sky Room are home to a stage and screen as well, and have seen everything from PowerPoint presentations at annual meetings to gala receptions to children’s birthday parties.

The Sky Room stage also is host to regular music events, such as a recent venture with the Folk Music Society of Huntington and its monthly Hard Luck Café every third Thursday from 8:30-10:30 p.m., with an open mic session at 7:30 p.m., and the Singer-Songwriter series with Long Island Pulse magazine on the last Wednesday of every month from 8-10 p.m.

Cinema Arts, in its 38th year, was started by Charlotte Sky and the late Vic Skolnick, and continues today with Sky and son Dylan Skolnick as co-directors. Homey touches such as introductions before movies are a hallmark, as are the selections – from art films and foreign films to documentaries to the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, as well as its Anything But Silent film series of silent classics with live music on the center’s theater organ. It also hosts a lunch and movie program with discussions.

In warmer weather, there’s a brick-lined courtyard outside with groupings of tables and plantings where movie-goers can relax and enjoy a hot meal or hot or cold snacks from the café in the Sky Room, where there also are tables indoors for during the colder months. The Sky Room, which opened in 2000, was renovated in 2009 when additional seating was added and access between the cafe and patio was improved.
