Today is the official holiday honoring the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would have been 83 years old.

He was assassinated in 1968.

Huntington congregations are participating in an interfaith service today at 2 p.m. to honor his memory.

The event, at the Suffolk Y Jewish Community center in Commack, includes an interfaith prayer service, choir concert an exhibit of children’s anti-hunger projects titled, We Can End Childhood Hunger, and  storyteller Heather Forrest.

Children in grads 4-6 are invited to a discussion of an excerpt of one of King’s speeches at 4 p.m. at the South Huntington Public Library, and participate in a small, community service project.

And the Huntington branch of the NAACP will commemorate King’s birthday at 7 p.m. at Bethel AME Church. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Luonne Abram Rouse, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Huntington.

Schools are closed today; town trash pickup is pushed back a day throughout the week. The LIRR is operating on a holiday schedule. Post offices are also closed.
