Huntington Notebook: Tax Exemptions Available; Piper Laurie Honored

Town Board member Mark Cuthbertson urges residents to apply.

The town is reminding Huntington residents over the age of 65 to apply for a possible senior tax exemption on Dec. 2012 tax bills.

The first, the Enhanced STAR school tax exemption, is a state-funded exemption for homeowners, according to a town release.

The requirements are: Applicants must be 65 years of age by Dec. 31, 2012 (except husband and wife or sibling co-owners; only one needs to be 65); 2010 income cannot exceed $79,050 (federal adjusted gross less taxable IRA distributions); and applicants will need to file with the Town Assessor’s Office by March 1, 2012, according to the town.

Additionally, a limited income senior citizen exemption is available for possible reductions to school, county, police, town, highway and library taxes, according to the town. For this exemption, 2011 income bills cannot exceed $37,400.

In other town news:

  • Town Board member Susan Berland was at Huntington Village’s Cinema Arts Centre recently to honor legendary actress Piper Laurie with an official proclamation from the Town of Huntington at a 50th anniversary screening of the film "The Hustler."
  • A seminar, Job Search Secrets For Empowering Your Future, will be presented by Town Bard member Mark Mayoka Feb. 28 at Town Hall in room 104 at 7 p.m. Details
