Huntington Fire Departments 'React' to Mock Crash
Nine departments from Huntington Township plus the Huntington First Aid Squad gather to "save victims" from an "accident" between a NY City transit bus and two vehicles. Police helicopter even airlifts "victims" to Huntington Hospital.
In a practice drill, nine fire departments from Huntington township gathered at Gershow Recycling to rescue 75 "victims" from a New York City transit bus as well as two vehicles, during a simulated accident.
People were cut out of the bus and the cars and some "victims" were even airlifted by police helicopter to Huntington Hospital to be worked on. This helped the rescue workers run through the ER procedures, said Brian Riggs, chief of the Huntington Fire Department, who was in charge of the drill. Bob Berry, the 2nd Deputy Chief, coordinated the drill.
Approximately one hundred and fifty fire department members took part in the drill as well as 75 trainees (victims). The victims were tagged so that the rescue workers knew whether they were working on someone with a heart issue, a broken leg, or some other ailment. Some victims were even tagged as "DOA."
Gershow provided the NYC transit bus and the vehicles, said Steve Rossetti, vice president of Special Projects for Gershow. They have just started to "ramp up this program," Rossetti said, but he felt that "everything went very smoothly."
"This is what we do for a living," said Kevin G. Gershowitz, president of Gershow Recycling. He added that they have a contract with NYC to get their obsolete buses, which they use as scrap metal. Gershow will be recycling all the vehicles from the simulated accident.
