'Devastating' End to Wrestling Season in Plainview

The Plainview JFK Plainview wrestling team was not permitted to compete in Saturdays’ Nassau County Qualifying Tournament because of a computer registration mistake.

It was devastating to one wrestler.

“The reason I want my voice to be heard is because I never want this to happen again to future wrestlers,” said Andrew Haft, a senior and multiple varsity athlete. “This was an embarrassment to our school and to the entire Plainview community."

East End Could Get LIRR 'Scoot' Trains

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has amended its five-year capital plan to budget for light diesel “scoot” trains on the Montauk and Greenport branches of the the Long Island Rail Road, a move that could make life much easier for commuters on the East End come 2014.

New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., I-Sag Harbor, said  the proposed “diesel multiple unit” trains come in sets of two cars and are lighter, more cost effective and have smaller engines than typical LIRR trains. When ridership is heavy, another pair of cars can be added to a train to accommodate the additional riders. The LIRR could purchase more in the future if the first fleet of shuttles is successful, according to Thiele.

New Leadership for Sbarro

The Board of Directors of Melville-based Sbarro, Inc. announced that the company has hired new leadership, after successfully emerging from bankruptcy last year.

James Greco, 54, has been named president and chief executive officer. In addition, J. David Karam, 53, formerly president of Wendy’s International, has agreed to serve as Sbarro’s new chairman.

Dick's Sporting Goods to Move Into Vacant Pathmark Site

Dick's Sporting Goods is coming to Commack within the year, filling the spot left vacant by Pathmark, according to a leasing agent for the property.

Crews have already begun work on the store, according to Robert Goldfeder, director of leasing for Basser-Kaufman real estate developers. Though the new location is slated to open sometime in 2012, no specific date has been set.

Committee Working to Keep School Open

The Save La Salle Regional School group continues to work towards keeping the Farmingdale school open after June, when the Diocese of Rockville Centre plans to close it and five others on Long Island.

The group has held multiple rallies, has collected nearly 200 petition signatures and recently sent a letter to parishioners for support.
