Berland, Cook Win Town Board Seats

Incumbent Glenda Jackson loses bid for second elected term in office; Morrow finishes third.

Incumbent Susan Berland and newcomer Gene Cook  won Town Board seats Tuesday in Huntington.

Cook said the victory was bittersweet.

"I thought that we would do a little better and I was hoping that we would, but the people have spoken to me and they want something done," said Cook, after his victory speech Tuesday at the Thatched Cottage in Huntington. "I'm going to go out there and do everything I can at Town Hall from now on."

Cook received 18,794 votes to Berland's 18,358.

Berland, a Democrat, and Cook, an Independent Party member running on the Republican line, fought off a tough challenge from Huntington Bay Mayor Herb Morrow who finished third. Incumbent Glenda Jackson finished fourth.

Jackson conceded the loss at Democratic headquarters in Huntington, saying that her experience on the board had been a learning experience, but "There’s no tears, everybody’s going to be okay."

Berland noted that the race had been rough but she was ready to return to service.

Morrow conceded defeat at the Thatched Cottage at about 11:30 p.m. The longtime Huntington Bay mayor finished a close third with 16,683 votes.

During the campaign, Cook, the owner of an asphalt and concrete company, promised to fight for lower the taxes and more affordable housing.

Morrow said he came up short, but did well.

"It's been a great couple of months, I met a lot of great people in Huntington and we still have to keep going to change the culture in Huntington," said Morrow. "For the people of Huntington, I hope they wake up and realize the corruption that is in our Town Hall."

In his speech, Morrow complimented Jackson.

"I don't agree with Glenda Jackson on anything, but I will tell you that over the course of the last six months I have gained an enormous amount of respect for her," said Morrow. "I hope Glenda continues to play a role in Huntington because her voice should be heard."

It was the culmination of a hard run for Cook who had to fight off a challenge in September for the Republican nomination after an earlier decision ordered the candidate removed from the Republican ticket.

Jackson received 15,668 votes.

Candidate Votes Percent Districts
Cook 18794 27.02 178 of 178
Berland 18358 26.39 178 of 178
Morrow 16683 23.98 178 of 178
Jackson 15668 22.52 178 of 178

I figured this would be what would happen. Susan Berland is very well liked in this town, but I knew Jackson was gone. Hopefully, this will bring some balance to the board.

I agree, it is nice to have a new voice on the board. I believe Mark Cuthbertson is next to run, and from what I understand from people within, he is not that popular, even in the Democratic party. This may finally give bring some sanity back to Town Hall.

You "understand from the people within, he is not that popular", What does that mean? You are already starting the disinformation campaign for the next town board election? Mark Cuthbertson has done a great job for our town and I predict that he will be the next supervisor should Frank retired he chooses to run.

There's a strong reason why Susan is very well liked in this town, she continues to do the job we've asked her to do.

Such as? All I have seen her do is vote yes for Avalon Bay, and blame the news for not focusing on "the good kids" in HS. She won, the people have spoken, but I still don't know of anything she has done to promote a better quality of life here in Huntington.

I don't know if this will give any comfort to those who are very disappointed but... I was able to get some specific numbers from a few Huntington Station/SD 3 Election Districts. The turn out was significantly higher than 2009 and they went overwhelmingly for Cook/Morrow. These are districts that are usually easily taken by Town Board Democtats. ED 154 (near the Washington School), was close to 2 to 1 in favor of Cook/Morrow. ED 53 which is also near the school, had higher turn out than 2009 and went significantly Cook/Morrow. ED 49 went significantly for Cook/Morrow. At least this tells me that we tried to stand up for ourselves, and that's something.

Kim, did you actually agree with something I said? Stop the presses! I think Petrone will retire. I stand by my prediction that Mark goes to the county level. No clue from there.

@ Kim, no clue on who would run for Petrone's seat. I liked Herb because the fastest way to improve the quality of life is to bring back a local police force. The SCPD is responding to macro-crime. A Huntington Police force would enforce loitering, speeding, stop sign breaches, something the SCPD just doesn't want to do. I also like term limits.

Easy to come up with ideas. Even good ideas. A real leader comes up with good, fiscally-responsible ideas. Any idea what a town-wide police department (and it would have to be large enough to cover the entire town) would cost? I don't but then I didn't run for public office. Don't know about you, but I can't afford to pay any more in taxes.

It's getting a little like China on the Patch... They just remove posts on a whim!

We removed an unacceptable comment about a candidate's drinking habits. Jim's comment was in response to that remark. When we removed the first, his went with it.

The GOP base simply did not come out and vote. This is clearly evident when looking at past election percentages. This data is available on the Suffolk BOE website. This is what cost Morrow the election.

If that is the case, then I don't want to hear anyone from the GOP complaining... period if they didn't vote. I have a friend of mine who is not happy on the way things are going who told me Monday he doesn't vote in local elections. You don't vote, then don't complain.

Thanks Pam - I'd still like to know why comments about the Yogurt Factory were removed as well. Still never got an answer from the editors...

It is sad that Glenda Jackson did not make it in. She is and was worth it.

@ Mary, I can appreciate the fact that you liked Glenda, but what did Glenda do to improve Huntington? Other than a fire hydrant dedication or the renaming of a street. So far, I have heard about a great job Berland, Cutherbertson and Jackson have done. I am just curious as to what is it they have done that is so impressive.

@Mary. Don't bother answering Mr. Livington's question. Any informed and intelligent voter knows what they did and recognizes that every photo op represents something positve that was done, ie., recognizing a child who got an award (maybe your's, mine or Mr. Livingston"s) a winning team, the opening of a new business, etc. I promise you Mr. Cook will not miss an oportunity to do the same the moment he begins his term as a councilman. Mr. Livingston doesn't really care what Ms. Berland and Ms. Jackson did and is simply angry Ms. Berland won. I predict he going to spend the next 2 years giving us the benefit of his "wisdom" which is soley to try and convince everyone that Mr. Cuthbertson and Mr. Petrone have done nothing for the town and should be removed from office. It is always sad when a portion of the voters are so partisan and actually believe that someone is a better person if they belong to a particular party (in his case, the Republicans).
I am, by the way, a Republican. I voted for Ms. Berland and Mr. Morrow. I'm sorry Mr. Morrow didn't win and Mr. Cook did but that the way it goes. I wish Mr. Cook the best of luck and hope he can contribute something positive to the town board but I am very skeptical of his motives and abilitites. Hopefully he will prove me wrong.

Mary, ask Tony what he wants you to have for lunch today. Since he has positioned himself as your advisor. So no one can tell me what any of the current board members did (including Mayoka) of substance? Reducing crime? Improving HS? Reducing taxes? Making the public sector work more efficiently? Ensuring the safety of citizens in the village after midnight? No? Save the photo ops and get to business. If Cook poses with a shovel at some ground breaking with the same consistency as Berland, Jackson and Cuthbertson, it will be business as usual, and he will greatly disappoint people who elected him, other than you Tony.

Mary, I recommend the the mesculin salad with goat cheese at the Golden Dolphin diner in Huntington Village. Fabulous food, safe environment and you may even get so see a politician or two having lunch while planning their next photo op and conspiring to aggravate Mr. Livingston.
