Updated: Barnes & Noble Store to Close

Huntington Station site unable to renew lease.

The Barnes & Noble store in Huntington Station will close Dec.31 when its lease expires.

There are no plans for the bookstore to relocate to another property.

David Deason, vice president of development for Barnes & Noble Booksellers, said, "We worked aggressively to structure an economic agreement that made sense for Barnes & Noble and the property owner. However, the owner has decided to divide the store up into smaller spaces and lease to other retailers at rents we simply can not afford."

In addition, Deason said, "We do not have plans to close or consolidate any other stores on Long Island and booksellers from the closing store are given the opportunity to interview at nearby location and fill open position there."

Federal Realty in Maryland, the landlord, lists the store’s space as available on its website and says it acquired the 14-store Huntington Shopping Center in 1988. None of the other units are identified as available. The bookstore is the fourth-largest unit in the center,  which is just south of Walt Whitman Mall.

Barnes & Noble had previously announced plans to shut down many of its stores across the country but the Huntington Station closing is the result of a failure to reach new lease terms.

It was not immediately known where some of the groups that meet regularly at the store would convene after the closing. At least one of those groups said, as of Monday morning, that it hadn't been informed of the closing.
