A Police Substation in Huntington Station?

Legis. Jon Cooper authors plan to place a police substation near Jack Abrams School.

Responding to the surge in street violence, drug dealings, and gang activity in Huntington Station, Suffolk County Legislative Majority Leader Jon Cooper, D-Lloyd Harbor, introduced a bill on Thursday to locate a facility to house a police substation near the Jack Abrams School in Huntington Station. A police substation had been located in Huntington Station until 2006.

"Every day I get desperate calls from constituents asking me to act to quell the growing street violence in Huntington Station," Cooper said. "If there ever was a time to bring back the police annex, this is it."

The area around Jack Abrams has been at the epicenter of the growing crime epidemic in Huntington Station this summer which caused school board officials to take the extraordinary step of deciding not to reopen the school to students when classes start again this fall.

Cooper said re-establishing a substation would heighten Suffolk County police presence, deter crime, and help make the streets of Huntington Station safer for all community residents. He added it would also send a strong signal that Suffolk County is serious about stopping crime in Huntington Station.

"The substation will restore a visible police presence where it is most needed in our community for residents who need it the most," Cooper said.
